EDMONTON – Griffins women's soccer head coach Dean Cordeiro recently had a front row seat to the type of dynamics his incoming central striker is capable of.
When the St. Albert Impact – where he's an assistant coach – posted a 4-2 win over the Calgary Callies in Alberta Premier League action on June 19, Ally Tannas scored both of the Callies' goals.
This type of performance just solidified her talent for Cordeiro, who was already well versed in her offensive capabilities after Tannas finished top five in League One Alberta scoring in 2025.
"She's an out and out central striker, which is nice," said Cordeiro, who will welcome Tannas among his key recruits for the 2026 Canada West season. "We are looking forward to adding her to our front three. Ally's just a handful for defenders to deal with. I couldn't believe her poise when we played against her in League One this past year.
"She might have been one of the most dominant players we had to defend against."
The 5-foot-9 Tannas previously grew up in the Southwest United program in Calgary and also played for Springbank high school.
Cordeiro, who signed Tannas in 2024 – midway through her Grade 11 year – believes she has big-time potential to create offense in Canada West.
"She's just so good at securing the ball, playing back to net and taking players on," he said. "She has a knack for scoring goals and creating opportunities for everybody else. We love just her work rate and the engine she has to cover ground and make it difficult on back lines. She's relentless in the pursuit of the ball, which is an attribute we look for in the front three."
And she's versatile. Tannas has also been a star centre-back in her youth.
"Her club teams will move her there, depending on the game scenario," explained Cordeiro, also noting that she can be a difference-maker on set pieces. "Her passing range, toughness and ability to defend 1v1 is a strong asset.
"I love Ally's profile. Her ability to contribute as an attacking player is where we see her mostly, but also being able to give us some minutes out of the back is a nice feather in her cap. That's the kind of versatility that we need."
