LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – Continuing their strong play of late, the MacEwan Griffins men's soccer team earned a point out of a 1-1 draw with the playoff-bound Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night.
Liam Van Laar scored his first Canada West goal in the 63rd minute before Lethbridge equalized in the 79th off a set piece when Nicholas Bilodeau hit the twine.
With the result, MacEwan improves to 2-7-4 and will have a chance to overtake Saskatchewan (3-7-3) in the Prairie Division standings in their regular season finale on Sunday (2 p.m. in Saskatoon, Canada West TV).
"I think we all feel something special is brewing inside this locker-room with this group," said Griffins head coach Adam Loga, whose squad has gone unbeaten in three-straight despite playing extremely short-handed due to injuries. "We had 15 players dressed today. It's insane. I'm so proud of these boys for what they're doing and putting together right now.
"Everything is clicking and you could say 'too little, too late', but at the end of the day, I guarantee you there's no team in this league that has gone as many games as we have without a full 18 dressed. The same thing will probably happen on Sunday. The guys are battling. They're competing and working for one another.
"Like I said to the lads in the room, 'everybody in that locker-room today is back next year.' These are growing pains, obviously a little bit, but at the same time, I know we're going to look back on this stretch here and know how valuable it's going to be moving forward."
Van Laar scored his goal on a spin-a-rama from inside the box after Ali Yildiz's free kick went off Azar El Khallaa and fell to him to slot past Lethbridge keeper Tegan Romaine.

Loga has liked the progression in the defender's game as the season's gone on.
"He came into camp and we felt he was a bit behind of where we would have hoped," he said. "But after some tough conversations, he worked his way back into the lineup and he's never really looked back.
"We've challenged him now to just keep that level of play at a consistent basis. He's showing he can do it."
Oleksandr Popravka made five saves for MacEwan, while Romaine stopped three for Lethbridge. The Griffins outshot the Pronghorns 11-9.
