EDMONTON – Bringing a high level of intensity to the point guard position, local product Cynan Compo is the latest promising addition to the MacEwan Griffins men's basketball 2025 recruiting class.
The 6-foot floor general led St. Francis Xavier to the 2024 metro city championship and provincial silver medal before playing last season with CTA West out of Calgary.
Perhaps the most notable honour of his career that sums up his character and work ethic is winning the 'Always Play with Heart' award from FX.
"I like his leadership, I like his scoring ability," said Griffins head coach David Kapinga. "He was known to be a very creative scorer and is relentless with his pursuit on the basketball court. So, I'm very excited to have him.
"He's a hometown kid also, so that was very important for me to have some hometown kids."
Although Compo was born in Prince George, B.C., he has lived in Edmonton since Grade 8.
"Having hometown kids is going to be very useful for us to create a culture that we need and to get the fans in the gym for us," said Kapinga.
There are more recruit announcements to come in Kapinga's 2025 class, but this is the end of the first round of the process with six recruits announced to date.
"So far, the big thing for me with this class is when you come to watch MacEwan play, you'll see skillful players, you'll see players that play for each other and you'll see great culture and intensity, and yet we have some compassion," said Kapinga.
"I think what our program needs is good players who are good people. That's what we have with every single one of our players – good basketball players who are good people and who are competitive. I think the mixture of that through time will create something very special for the program."
