Three Stars: Obasuyi, Chabot, Frith earn honours
MacEwan Athletics
EDMONTON – Women's basketball student-athlete Unity Obasuyi is the MacEwan Athletics' first star of the week after recording back-to-back double doubles during a road series at Mount Royal.
The third-year forward combined for 52 points and 21 rebounds in two games – the first two double doubles of her career.
Men's hockey forward Kadyn Chabot and women's volleyball left side Kara Frith are the second and third stars, respectively.
It's the second appearance of the season for both Obasuyi (previously third star on Nov. 4) and Chabot (previously first star on Nov. 12), while Frith is being honoured for the first time in 2025-26.

Although she was constantly double teamed, bumped, grabbed and jostled as the Mount Royal Cougars focused on stopping MacEwan's No. 1 offensive threat, Obasuyi still managed to put up 52 points and 21 rebounds combined in a weekend road series.
In Friday's 78-70 loss, Obasuyi scored a game-high 30 points on a sizzling 50% field goal percentage, adding 10 rebounds, two steals and an assist. She shot 7-for-11 from beyond the arc, which is the second-best ever by a Griffin in a Canada West match (Kendall Lydon went 7-for-10 in a 2017 game).
Her 30-point effort is the second most of her career and is tied for the sixth-most by a Griffin in a CW regular season game.

She will lead MacEwan into home action this weekend vs. cross-town rival Alberta (Friday, 5 p.m. and Saturday, 3 p.m., both David Atkinson Gym, Canada West TV).
Kadyn Chabot became the third Griffins men's hockey player to net a hat trick in a Canada West game and tied the program record with four points in MacEwan's 5-4 OT win over UBC last Friday (Liam Froment photo).

There were several Griffins players who contributed in a big way to MacEwan's 5-4 overtime win over UBC last Friday, which ended the Thunderbirds' nine-game winning streak.
Front and centre in the victory, though, was Chabot, who exploded for three goals and four points, tying a program record.
He's also the third Griffins men's hockey player to get a hat trick in a Canada West regular season game (following Ethan Strang in 2023 and Kole Gable in 2024).
Chabot opened the scoring for MacEwan 5:53 into the game when he finished off a gorgeous cross-seam powerplay pass from Vincent Scott.

No. 2 on the evening came at 7:07 of the second period when he tipped in Tyson Kowaluk's point shot. The hatty marker came off another one-timer on a feed by Scott, while Chabot also drew an assist on Brett Bamber's game-tying goal with 1:52 left.
For the season, Chabot has already matched his goals total from all of 2024-25 with nine so far. That has him tied for the Canada West goal-scoring lead.
The Griffins will host Saskatchewan on Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (5 p.m., both Downtown Community Arena, Canada West TV).
Kara Frith led the Griffins with 33 kills combined in two weekend wins over the Mount Royal Cougars (Husain Dhooma photo).

The play of the veteran left side was high-level, clutch and massive for a Griffins team that swept Mount Royal over the weekend to get back into the playoff race.
Frith finished with a combined 33 kills, three aces, 11 digs, five blocks and 28.5 points over nine sets of entertaining volleyball that saw the Griffins win twice to improve to 3-5.
In Friday's 3-1 triumph, Frith led the Griffins with 18 kills on a .368 hitting percentage, adding an ace, five digs and a block, while accounting for a match-high 19.5 points.
