Three Stars: Currie, Gordon, Chabot earn honours
MacEwan Athletics
EDMONTON – Women's hockey student-athlete Taya Currie is the MacEwan Athletics first star of the week after stopping 73 of 77 shots sent her way in a weekend series at Manitoba.
Her coup de grâce came on Friday when the Griffins were outshot 42-12, but won 3-2 after she refused to lose, stopping 40 shots.
Women's basketball guard Toni Gordon and men's hockey forward Kadyn Chabot are the second and third stars, respectively.
It's the second time in 2025-26 that Currie has made the Three Stars, having previously been named first star on Nov. 4 when she was also Canada West women's hockey player of the week.
Chabot is making the list for the fourth time this season after being named first star on Nov. 12 and Jan. 13 and second star Nov. 18. The latter two also came with Canada West men's hockey player of the week honours.

With the Griffins being badly outshot in Friday's contest at Manitoba, Currie slammed the door shut on the Bisons with a sizzling 40-save effort that led MacEwan to a 3-2 win.
They were outshot 42-12, so it's the true definition of stealing a game. Currie was aptly named first star of the contest.

Making back-to-back starts for the first time this season, Currie made 33 saves on 35 shots in Saturday's rematch as the Griffins were again outshot big time (36-13) but were only a goal down until the Bisons hit an empty net with 1:40 left. She earned third star honours.
For the season, Currie has a 2.38 GAA and .930 save percentage, which is tied for eighth in Canada West. But she's the only goalie in the conference's top-10 in save percentage who has faced more than 400 shots (413) and one of only four who has even faced more than 300.
The Griffins are back home this weekend as they host UBC on Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (3 p.m., both Downtown Community Arena, Canada West TV).
Toni Gordon, seen in action against Calgary earlier this month, produced a double double in the first half of Friday's game at Manitoba (Husain Dhooma photo).

In perhaps her finest effort as a Griffin, Gordon recorded a double double in the FIRST HALF in Friday's game at Manitoba.
She recorded 17 of her 21 points and 11 of her 15 rebounds in the first 20 minutes, adding two assists, two steals and two blocks in a huge effort for the Griffins in an 81-72 loss. It was the sixth double double of her career.

With his first period power-play goal, Chabot went past Strang's 27-point effort from 2023-24.
