SASKATOON, Sask. – Scoring in single digits in three of the four quarters, the MacEwan Griffins women's basketball team was overwhelmed by the defending U SPORTS and Canada West champion Saskatchewan Huskies in their season opener on Friday night.
The Huskies cruised to a dominant 87-28 win, holding all but three members of the MacEwan lineup completely off the scoresheet.
"I think a big takeaway is the details matter and discipline in the details matters," said Griffins head coach Katherine Adams. "You can talk about it and you can emphasize it in practice, but when you get up against a team that capitalizes on every error when you don't execute things exactly right or you're not in the right position (this is the result).
"Sask is a very good team and they did a very good job of doing that today. It got us on our heels a little bit and we got a little bit gun-shy in our scoring opportunities. We take what we can for it. We have another opportunity tomorrow to make some changes in those little details that will help us hopefully let us feel a little better about our performance."

The only Griffin the Huskies had trouble with was Unity Obasuyi, who finished with 20 of MacEwan's 28 points, including going 5-for-12 from the three-point line, which is the seventh-best performance in program history from beyond the arc.
"She was outstanding today," said Adams. "She really took advantage of the opportunities that were available to her. She has put in a ton of work over the last six months. It showed today because she made shots."
Now, they dearly need to get others on the roster going if they're going to find any success.
"We know Unity has a really special ability to score the ball," said Adams. "We want to see her succeed in doing that, but we also know that we need to find other ways to make it happen. That's the challenge in this situation. We're thrilled Unity's able to contribute in that way and be so efficient scoring the ball, but we need people around her to now help carry the load a little bit."
The Griffins will meet the Huskies again on Saturday (5 p.m. MT, Canada West TV).
