Griffins nearly pull off improbable second-half rally after slow start, led by Obasuyi's double double

CALGARY – If they could somehow bottle the second half on Friday, the Griffins women's basketball team would be tough to beat.
Down 43-17 after an incredibly slow start, MacEwan rallied to outscore Mount Royal 53-35 in the second half, their improbable rally coming up just short in a 78-70 loss on Friday night.
"It was a tale of two halves, for sure," said Griffins head coach Katherine Adams. "I think a switch flipped and something was triggered in the second half. They came out, they fought and they battled. They generated turnovers."
Specifically, the Griffins forced just eight turnovers in the first half and 31 for the game.
"We forced them into 23 turnovers in the second half, which really helped fuel our offensive run and make it a game," said Adams. "It was a one possession game at 73-70 and we just didn't capitalize at the end to complete the story, but certainly a tremendous effort all around for us to make it a game the way we did."
Unity Obasuyi had perhaps her strongest overall game as a Griffin, posting the first double double of her career with a monster 30 points and 10 rebounds.

"She certainly came to life, particularly in the second half," said Adams of Obasuyi's 23-point second-half effort. "We found her and she does what she does best. The part about her game today that was most impressive is yeah she scored and she hit shots, which we're growing accustomed to her doing, but I thought she defended well. I thought that she really just locked in defensively and got stuff done when she needed to.
"That showed in her rebounding effort, as well – 10 boards is I think her high and this may be the first double double of her career, which is really big."
Now the challenge for Saturday's rematch (5 p.m., Canada West TV) will be to build off that second half performance and try to be more consistent all game.
"We've got to bring that same energy and same level of compete to the table, so hopefully we're looking at a different situation and we're not having to come back from being down 26 at half," said Adams. "If we're able to be competitive from the get-go, you don't dig a hole and you see what happens."
With the result, the Griffins fell to 0-7, while MRU improved to 3-4.
