EDMONTON – The home crowd was treated to one of the top offensive performances ever by a Griffins women's basketball player, even if the home team came up short on the scoreboard, losing 75-52 to the Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday.
Unity Obsuyi finished with a career-high 31 points – the fifth-most by a Griffin in a Canada West game – as she again carried the bulk of the offence for MacEwan.
"I think just going into the flow and playing with flow," she said of what worked to go over 30 points for the first time in her Canada West career. "That's how I get into my zone and that's what helps me. Just being there helps a lot with my game, both on offence and defence."
And to think, it could have been much more than that. Obasuyi never really got rolling until the second quarter, went 5-for-13 on three pointers and shot 6-for-11 from the charity stripe.
If a few more of those drop, Noelle Kilbreath's program record 39 points (from 2024) would have been threatened.
"It was certainly impressive," said Griffins head coach Katherine Adams. "I thought she responded well from a bit of a tough day yesterday. Shooting-wise, she found her rhythm. I thought she was very calm and composed in how she approached the game today. It was really great to see her rewarded for that."

However, the flip side to that, is Obasuyi was one of only four Grifffins players to hit the scoreboard. Toni Gordon did have the fifth double double of her career with 11 points and 11 rebounds, Allie Spenrath had nine and Paige Massier scored one.
Samantha Hickey continued her strong defensive play with three more blocks to finish the weekend with nine. But there just wasn't enough overall offensive production.
"It's just tough," said Adams. "When teams are keying in on Unity and taking her away, you need some other people to step up and we just struggled with that today. We only had four people score. Our challenge is to find ways for other people to step up and contribute because we need that if we're going to get anything going this season."
With the result, MacEwan falls to 0-4 on the young season, while Winnipeg improves to 2-1.
The Wesmen gained an early lead in the first quarter and never relinquished it. Try as they might, the Griffins could never really get inside a 10-point deficit from there, and it ballooned at the end with younger players in the game.
"We'd do some really good things offensively and create some good opportunities, but we just couldn't get a stop when we needed," said Adams. "We couldn't double up on good plays – get a score and a stop, score and a stop to close that gap any further.
"Credit to them, they found open people and found ways to get scores in those moments, which is exactly what you want to do when you're in that situation. It's something for us to learn from and hopefully grow with going forward."
Winnipeg had their own star going strong as Raia Guinto led them with 22 points, but when the Griffins keyed on her, the Wesmen found better secondary scoring than MacEwan did. Jennifer Kallon racked up 17 points, while nine others hit the scoresheet.

"We just had to lock in more on defence, talk more, communicate and close those gaps," said Obasuyi. "That's where we really struggled today, but that's what we know we need to pick up. Just keep practising and learning and then just clean it up next time and hopefully we have more success in the future."
That's what the Griffins will be working on in practice as they get set to host Thompson Rivers next weekend.
"We've got some really impressive individual performances," said Adams. "We just need to be able to string together a solid team performance."
