SASKATOON, Sask. – Growth is tough to come by when you're facing the best team in the country.
Saturday's box score – a 98-37 loss to the Saskatchewan Huskies – wouldn't indicate much positive happened, but Griffins head coach Katherine Adams found some takeaways, nonetheless.
"Our focus in the areas we were really looking to show growth in – a little bit more even distribution in scoring and shot attempts, sharing the ball and getting the ball inside, I thought we did a much better job of," she said. "And just competing with more purpose really.
"I know the margin didn't really change, but just what we were able to accomplish outside of the scoreboard was more positive as we look ahead to Winnipeg next weekend."
With the result, the Griffins will be 0-2 when they host the Wesmen for their home opener next Friday (5 p.m., David Atkinson Gym, Canada West TV).
On Saturday, at the very least, they had more contributors. A night after the Huskies held all but three Griffins entirely off the scoresheet, MacEwan got scoring from seven players this time.
Unity Obasuyi again led the way with 11 points, finishing with 31 over the weekend – big-time production against an elite team keying largely on her.
"Obviously impressive," said Adams. "We know teams are going to key on her. She had a great shooting night yesterday and with lots of attention focused on her, scoring for her becomes even more challenging. Just her presence on the floor is such a difference maker for us with her ability to score in different ways."
Saskatchewan had five players in double digits, led by Tea Demong's double double (17 points and 12 rebounds).
