EDMONTON – After a breakout performance with four points in Friday's 5-1 win over the Trinity Western Spartans, Griffins rookie forward Dwayne Jean Jr. has been named Canada West BioSteel men's hockey player of the week.
Jean Jr.'s night included a goal and three assists as he matched five program records – most points and assists by a Griffin and by a Griffins rookie in a Canada West game, and best plus-minus (+3) by a MacEwan rookie.
To net four points in a Canada West game is no easy feat and has only been accomplished two other times by a Griffins player – Curtis Roach in 2021 and Sam Simard in 2024.
"This league is a very good league," said Griffins head coach Zack Dailey. "It's a step up from the junior leagues, so any time a guy who's a first year can come in and have that kind of performance, it's pretty amazing because it's a tough league to produce points in."
Jean Jr. scored MacEwan's first goal on Friday, burying a back door pass from Kadyn Chabot on a two-on-one rush. He then proceeded to draw helpers on goals by Brody Tallman, Chabot and Ethan Sundar.

"Speed and compete level were the two biggest things," said Dailey of what stood out about Jean Jr.'s game that evening. "I think his speed really pushes defenders back on their heels and sometimes gives them a little bit more space. He was able to use that space to make some really good plays."

Through the wickets!

It's the fifth time a MacEwan men's hockey player has earned the prestigious Canada West player of the week honour as Jean Jr. follows Riley Brandt (2021-22), Ethan Strang (twice in 2023-24) and Kole Gable (2023-24).
In many ways, a player of the week honour is a team award, too, which shows how well the Griffins are playing to now amass a 4-3-1 record after sweeping Trinity Western.

"I thought as a group we did a lot of things right," said Dailey. "I liked our competitiveness; I thought we transitioned pucks really well and put a lot of pressure on their defence. So, those are all positives.
"(Jean Jr.'s) line, in particular, has been doing a great job of creating chances off of the rush and down low in zone. So, I'm happy to see Dwayne and his linemates (Caden Cabana and Liam Hughes) get rewarded."
The Griffins are preparing for a home-and-home series vs. Calgary this weekend – Friday (7 p.m., Downtown Community Arena) and Saturday (7 p.m. in #YYC, both Canada West TV).
