REGINA, Sask. – Seizing momentum by scoring the quickest two goals that Canada West has borne witness to in more than 11 years, the MacEwan Griffins hammered the Regina Cougars 6-1 on Saturday night to get back to .500 in the Canada West standings.
Kadyn Chabot and Brody Tallman scored seven seconds apart late in the first period to open up a 3-0 lead for MacEwan – the third-fastest pair of goals by a single team in Canada West history.
Only the 1989 Alberta Golden Bears and 2014 Calgary Dinos were faster, both tying for the conference record with goals five seconds apart.
"That's great," said Griffins head coach Zack Dailey. "We talk about our responses after goals for and goals against that the next shift is a very important one, either to keep the momentum or sway the momentum.
"Two goals back-to-back really swayed the momentum in our favour, so that was huge for our group."
With the win, the Griffins mined three of a possible four points out of their weekend series at Regina and improved to 5-5-2 in the Canada West standings. Regina dropped to 1-9-0.
"I was extremely happy," said Dailey of the response from Friday's 4-3 shootout loss. "I challenged this group to be better, and I thought they responded quite well."

Chabot, who led the Griffins with three points, set up Logan Dowhaniuk for the game's opening goal – a powerplay point blast at 10:33 of the first period.
Then Chabot scored what would prove to be the winner at 16:26, a gorgeous one-timer off Sam Simard's two-on-one feed down low.

We are witnessing the third-fastest pair of goals by one team in @CanadaWest history!
Just seven seconds after Kadyn Chabot put @MacEwanGriffins up 2-0, Brody Tallman makes it 3-zip.

"I challenged some of these guys and I really liked the response that they gave me," said Dailey. "He's someone who's been getting a lot of chances and hasn't been able to convert, so happy to see some of these scoring chances go in."
But they weren't done with the quick strikes. In the second period, Chabot notched his second of the game 6:13 into the frame, stepping into a blast after flying over the blueline and accepting Vincent Scott's pass on a T.

"Again, really happy with our group and the willingness to keep our foot on the gas and not let up," said Dailey. "There was a few lapses here and there, but for the most part I thought they did a great job of playing a complete game."
After Regina spoiled rookie goaltender Zac Onyskiw's shutout bid when Coel Wirun scored, Carter Chorney restored MacEwan's five-goal advantage on a powerplay goal midway through the third.

Onyskiw finished with 18 saves for the victory.
Unfortunately, some injuries hit the Griffins in the contest as both Brody Tallman and Tanner Fincaryk went down awkwardly on collisons along the boards.
"We got a little bit banged up here, so guys are going to need a couple days off to recoup, especially with a long bus ride back and getting in late," said Dailey. "But we're going to prepared for our next opponent. We're going to be excited to play."
The Griffins will have a home doubleheader vs. UBC on Nov. 14-15.
