EDMONTON – Griffins fans have already been treated to the highly-skilled Sundar brand of hockey over the past two seasons with Ethan filling nets on a regular basis.
Two Sundars are better than one, of course, which will be the case in 2026-27 when his younger brother Evan joins him in Maroon and White.
Spruce Grove Saints fans enjoyed that dynamic at the tail end of the 2023-24 season – the last time the Sundars played together on the same team.
"Quite similar," said Griffins head coach Zack Dailey on the two brothers, who both grew up in the St. Albert elite hockey stream. "They're both extremely skilled and they skate well. Evan does take faceoffs, which is different than Ethan. But I think you'll be able to see some similarities in their game through just the skill level those guys have."
While Ethan went directly to MacEwan after playing for the Saints – amassing 42 career regular season points in 48 games since – Evan continued his junior career in the BCHL, playing for the Trail Smoke Eaters in 2024-25 (35 points in 46 games) and the Vernon Vipers in 2025-26.
The forward had 16 goals and 31 points in 42 games, wearing an 'A' for the Vipers this past season before winning Vernon's Blueliners Award and Scholarship at the team's annual banquet.
"We're excited to have him," added Dailey. "I think it's kind of unique being able to play with your brother. We had that situation last year with the Dowhaniuk brothers and they really enjoyed it. I think just being able to play at home in front of your family was appealing to him."
Evan Sundar also had 64 points for the Spruce Grove Saints in 103 games over parts of three seasons to kick off his junior career, which began when he was only 16.
The 5-foot-10 centre/winger will have an opportunity to contribute immediately for the Griffins.
"He's a skilled player – great on the powerplay," said Dailey. "He plays down the middle of the ice and will just add skill and compete to our lineup. We're happy to have him and I think he can step in right away and produce points for our group.
"The expectation for him is he's going to be able to come in and do things correctly but definitely help produce scoring chances and points for our group right away."
