SASKATOON, Sask. – Shut out for the seventh time this season, the Griffins women's hockey team generated just 10 shots on goal in a 2-0 loss to the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday night.
Goaltender Taya Currie was exceptional, making 35 saves on 37 shots as she held MacEwan in the game, but ultimately, their scoring woes came back to haunt them again.
"She made a lot of saves for us tonight and kept the game close," said Griffins head coach Chris Leeming. "U of S plays a lot of close games, and I think they were definitely comfortable in that situation.
"At the end of the day, we have to find a way to get more pucks on net. The ones that we did, we had some secondary chances that we just didn't get to either."
With the result, the Griffins fall to 2-11-2 on the campaign, while Saskatchewan improves to 6-3-2.
Captain Sydney Olsen had four of MacEwan's 10 shots, while Rian Santos finished with three, but there was just not enough offence overall for the Griffins, who have scored just 11 times in 15 games this season.
"We've got to find a way to funnel more bodies and pucks to the front of the net," said Leeming. "They're a stingy defensive team and that's a little bit of their identity. I think we could have pushed a little bit harder to make the most of those opportunities and get better quality shots and chances for ourselves."
The teams will meet again on Saturday (4 p.m. MT, Canada West TV).
