EDMONTON – Former Griffins women's hockey player Carley Jewell won a MacEwan University 2026 Emerging Leader Award on Wednesday.
The 2020 Bachelor of Science graduate was named as one of four honourees for the award, which celebrates trendsetters, innovators and leaders who started their journey at MacEwan.
Jewell had an illustrious career for the Griffins from 2015-20, helping lead the team to three-straight ACAC Championships (2017-19), while winning ACAC Player of the Year in 2017-18.
The defenceman, who had 59 points in 113 regular season games – the most-ever by a Griffin who played exclusively on the blueline – also cracked the ACAC first all-star team in 2017-18 and the second team in 2019-20.
In 2017-18, she was named the Most Outstanding Player for Griffins women's hockey.
Since graduating, Jewell has transformed her experiences with concussion recovery into a research career, advancing psychosocial rehabilitation for athletes.
Now a doctoral candidate in Applied Health Sciences at Brock University, Jewell's participatory research engages youth athletes and their support networks to co-create innovative social support programs that strengthen recovery outcomes.
Her work has been nationally recognized with awards from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Catalyst Grant as co-principal applicant, and multiple conference invitations across Canada and abroad.
Beyond academia, Jewell is a mentor and mental performance consultant-in-training with the Brock University swim team, where she applies sport psychology principles to athlete well-being.
As an active Hockey Canada official and officiating coach, she also champions sport development and mentorship within her community.
