CALGARY – In a special moment that came in her fifth start with the Griffins, goaltender Taya Currie earned her first Canada West win and first shutout as MacEwan blanked Calgary 1-0 on Friday night.
The Parkhill, Ont. product, who transferred to the Griffins from Providence College (NCAA Div. 1), will certainly be keeping that game puck.
Currie made 28 saves, which stood up for a victory after captain Sydney Olsen scored the game-winner on an overtime powerplay.
"She was absolutely dialled," said Griffins head coach Chris Leeming. "She made a handful of great saves. From our perspective, we weren't sure how she made the save. She got the job done. She was really in the zone today doing her job.
"It's been nice that we've had that consistent goaltending to keep us in games. It's a pretty cool moment for her to get her first Canada West win and shutout."
Currie has split the net with Lindsey Johnson so far this season with the duo combining for a .927 save percentage (Currie at .925 and Johnson at .929). Currie was electric on Saturday, coming up especially big on a late penalty kill that got the Griffins into overtime.
"There were probably two big saves each period," said Leeming. "Late in the game on the penalty kill there was one for sure. In the second period, I don't know how she saw it, but she made a pretty good blocker save to put the puck in the corner.
"She was steering everything to corner and allowed us (to regroup). Our goalies have been really great for us in terms of giving us poise and confidence in our D zone."
Shout out to Taya Currie, who has her first career @CanadaWest shutout!

With the victory, the Griffins improve to 2-7-1 on the season, dropping Calgary to 6-3-1.
All Currie needed was one goal in the run support department. And she got it when Olsen ripped a perfect shot from the point on a 4-on-3 advantage that went off the post and in 1:36 into the extra session.
OT WINNER!

"It's another powerplay goal for us, so that's a huge piece," said Leeming of a unit that has suddenly caught fire after struggling to score early in the season. "We also had a huge penalty kill with just over two minutes left in the game to get us into overtime. Our work from our special teams on both sides really helped us earn that win today."
Maisie Cope finished with 18 saves for Calgary in a terrific goaltending battle.
"Overall, it was probably one of our more complete games," said Leeming. "It was really great to see the group build off of a strong third period last night."
Now the Griffins will try and build on that effort next weekend when they host Regina twice (Nov. 7-8 at the DCA).
