EDMONTON – Strong detail-oriented play all over the ice comes naturally for newest Griffins women's hockey recruit Mya Magowan.
It's in the genes, in fact, as her two older brothers – Logan and Lucas – combined for 291 games of Junior A hockey, mostly spent in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
Magowan will kick off a promising U SPORTS career in 2026-27 after spending the last two seasons playing for the Calgary Fire Black U18AAA squad, where she recorded 17 points in 56 AFHL regular season games.
"She comes from a hockey family, so she's got that hockey mindset," said Griffins head coach Chris Leeming. "She plays a simple, competitive game. She's smart, sees the ice well and can play physical. She doesn't back away from that.
"That's a theme we've been looking for here is to add that element to our game. There is always going to be the learning curve of the pace of the game for those coming in, but people who are willing to (be physical) before they even get here, they don't have to add it to their game, so that's big. A lot of these girls (in our recruiting class) do that, which is one of the major points of focus here."
Magowan will add her strong two-way game to MacEwan's forward corps, where competitiveness is always key in Leeming's game model.
"She just sees the ice well, understands spacing and knows how to support pucks as a centreman," said Leeming. "She plays a little bit of wing, too. She likes to play in the middle of the ice and never goes on the forecheck without making contact with somebody.
"When she came to skate with us, we saw her ability to make plays under pressure, under sticks, between people's feet and that really caught our eye. She's someone who can fill a role for us and play a pretty solid 200-foot game."
Calgary Fire coach Jordan Fenton said this about her on Instagram: "If height were measured by tenacity, Mya would be 10 feet tall. Her grit and determination sets her apart from many other players in the league."
