Tracking towards program career points record, Isley leads Griffins into series vs. UBC

EDMONTON – On the next point she gets, Allee Isley will gain sole possession of first place on the program's career Canada West points list.
The fourth-year forward enters the weekend tied with former Griffin Joie Simon for top spot at 27 career points – a quest aided by netting two points in a pair of games at Manitoba Jan. 23-24.
Most notably, Isley scored the winning goal in last Friday's 3-2 victory over the Bisons when she crashed the net to cash a loose puck late in the third period.
"I was being kind of the F3 just in case – last two-minute rule – and I saw Rian (Santos) just smack it against her back and it was just laying there," said Isley. "So, I thought, 'OK, just go.' There were a lot of bodies in front of the net, and I ended up putting it in, so that was good."

It's exactly the way Griffins head coach would love to see his team scoring goals – getting to the net front and creating havoc.
"At the end of the day, that's been something we've been trying to get everybody to do is just be hungry for pucks at the net," he said. "Allee was in the right place at the right time. The read she made on that to be there was good. With the play that was made to get the puck there, she was hunting it. She wanted to put that puck in. She saw it and she gave everything she had on it to make sure it crossed the line.
"That was definitely huge for us to give us the lead in that moment."
The Griffins will be aiming for the win column again this weekend as they host the top-ranked team in the country, welcoming UBC (22-2-0) to the Downtown Community Arena for games Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (3 p.m., both Canada West TV). Friday is the program's Stick Up for Pride Tape game, while Saturday's contest follows the annual Skate with the Griffins alumni endeavour.

The Griffins (5-15-2) still have a shot at a playoff spot, but they face extremely long odds. They would have to win all of their final six games and have Trinity Western (11-12-1) lose their last four to pass them in the standings.
Still, MacEwan does have a better shot at eclipsing their best points total in the Canada West era, which was set last year when they had 15. They need four points over their last six contests to accomplish that.
"We always have goals every weekend, like split the weekend or at least get a point," said Isley. "Obviously, we're hoping to get at least one win this weekend and playoffs, we're still looking at it. We haven't given up yet."
Isley's consistent play, which has led to her recording 11 goals and 27 points since coming into Canada West in 2022, has been what has her a point away from the program record.
"With Allee from Day 1, she's been somebody who has demonstrated competitiveness and a willingness to learn – always asking questions, always wanting to improve her skill set and learn," said Leeming. "I think that's a huge piece of her success that she's been able to accomplish so far."
There's also her maturation as a person, which helps her succeed on and off the ice.
"I mentioned her development and attention to detail and focus on growth as an athlete, but as a person, she's matured quite a bit, as well," said Leeming. "Being in her fourth year, it's been very obvious she's taken strides.
"That mental side of her game, she's able to exude that confidence and competitiveness, and do it in a way that's productive for herself and that benefits the team, as well."

One of her biggest goals of the season doesn't even count towards her points totals as she beat Alberta goaltender Grace Glover blocker side in the fourth round of the shootout back on Dec. 6 to deliver MacEwan's first win over their cross-town rivals, 2-1.
"I was really nervous," she said. "I also did a similar thing against Regina a couple years prior. So, I was just going in (thinking) 'look what you have and just shoot, just find what's open.' So, I just went in with that mindset, saw the opening and put it there."
To find some success against UBC this weekend won't be easy, but the Griffins did have one particularly close game against them earlier this season, losing 1-0 in their season opener back on Oct. 3 at the DCA.
"I think what we have to do is play really good defence, which is one of our stronger suits," said Isley. "Then we have to capitalize on the chances that we get.
"Powerplays, we've got to figure that out because those are the times we have to score if we want to stay in the game. That's our issue is we don't score a lot and, at the end of the day, that's how you win games."
