EDMONTON – With a proven set of offensive skills that has allowed her to make a big impact wherever she's played, Haley Braun will bring her game to the U SPORTS level next season with the MacEwan Griffins.
The Winnipeg product had 52 points across 88 combined games with Ontario Hockey Academy last season – including 22 points in 41 games in the OWHL U22AA league (the same loop current Griffins goalie Taya Currie used to play in). She will be a welcome addition to the Griffins' offensive attack as they aim to increase their scoring output.
"Having Haley join our program boosts our team's ability to generate offence as she has a great set of hands and strong vision to be able to make plays, as well as convert on the opportunities she gets herself," said Griffins head coach Chris Leeming.
"She has a calm demeanour and impacts the game with her ability to dictate the play with possession with her strong hockey IQ as it affords her the ability to execute high percentage plays consistently when under pressure."
Braun kicked off her U18 journey by recording 43 points in 32 games for the Winnipeg Ice before moving to Saskatchewan where she posted 48 points in 30 games with the Saskatoon Stars in 2023-24.
She then led the Saskatchewan Junior Female Hockey League in scoring in 2024-25 with 42 goals and 65 points in just 20 games with the Outlook Ice Hawks.
"Haley has scored everywhere she's gone," said Leeming. "Evident by the fact that she has consistently been in the top of league scoring the past five seasons.
"Haley was also on Team Manitoba when I was (coaching Team Alberta), so I got to see her first-hand. She's a highly offensive player and we're looking to add that to the lineup. She's the type of player that positively contributes to your team's offensive identity when she's got the puck on her stick."
Braun is also a high character player who will add to the solid culture that already exists with the Griffins women's hockey team.
"It's a big priority for us as we've worked really hard to get a good dressing room and we want to maintain that," said Leeming. "Any former teammates and coaches I have spoken to have nothing but great things to say about her."
Braun not only represented Manitoba at the 2023 U18 national women's championship, she also competed in the 2023 and 2024 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships.
"She's pretty cerebral when she's got the puck but also doesn't live on the perimeter," said Leeming. "She takes pucks to the inside to make plays and get secondary chances as well because of her skill-set.
"Being a top scorer in that Sask league, we were very aware of who she is, so we're excited to add her."
